Details

The Pharcyde’s landmark Labcabincalifornia was originally released on November 14th, 1995. Their follow up to their legendary debut Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde (itself released on November 24th, 1992) with the album ultimately launching three singles, “Runnin’”, “She Said” and “Drop” (which would go on to massive MTV music video fame due to it’s first ever entirely backwards filmed video directed by Spike Jonze).

After support slots for De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest as well as a successful performance on Lollapalooza’s second stage in 1994, The Pharcyde released its second album, “Labcabincalifornia”, which was a calmer but no less warped follow up to their first album. Where their debut “Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde” showed a group of hilarious and immature juveniles joking and discussing issues facing teens over cartoon-style beats, “Labcabin” displays men who have matured into adulthood and now celebrate the essence of Hip Hop. Lyrically, the MCs are less humorous and much more intelligent sounding, dropping verses that make you want to check the liner notes and read the lyrics.

They also use their interesting voices more creatively, often harmonizing and singing. But the real treat that makes this album stand apart from their debut is the production. It has a smooth and focused tone that is unique, thanks to Jay Dee (R.I.P.). This amazing beat maker produces most of the tracks on the album.
